Cornwall, England
Our mother's mother, Harriett Wood, was born Harriett Rosevear in Millom, Lancashire, England in 1890. Her parents, Jacob Rosevear and Emma Jane Pomery, were both born in Cornwall in the southwest of England. The Rosevear family in Cornwall can be traced back to the 1400's and the Rosevear name is known from before the Norman Invasion. The Pomeroy family is also an old Cornish family from at least the Norman Invasion.
Jacob was born in the village of Illogen, in west Cornwall, near the northern coast. Originally a rural farm community, in the late 18th century mining dominated the economy. By the early 19th century the tin and copper mines in the region were the some of the richest in the world. There is some evidence that Cornwall was settled in pre-history and trading in tin was flourishing.
Emma Jane was born in Liskeard. Her father, John, also worked in the mines. Liskeard was a farming community dating back to Norman times. In the Medieval period Liskeard was a thriving market town. In the early 19th century copper was discovered and a mining boom resulted. By the end of the 19th century mining had declined and the population began to drop as people moved elsewhere.
Did the Rosevear family know the Pomery family? Both families are very old and settled in Cornwall. But I think it is probably unlikely that Jacob and Emma knew each other, or that their families knew of each other while living in Cornwall. Liskeard and Illogen are about 50 miles apart. In the late 19th century there was a train that one could travel to go between the two, but what would have been the circumstances of meeting? Jacob and Emma had both moved, independently of each other it seems, to Cumbria by the time they were of marrying age.
