Wheeler - Wood - Mitchell connections
Our mother’s family settled in what is now Boyd’s Mills, Wayne county, Pennsylvania where her great grandfather, Joseph Wood, owned sawmills and prospered in the lumber business with his partner Thomas Boyd. Our father’s family settled in Delaware county, New York in and around Hancock and Deposit, New York. Ebenezer Wheeler, our great-great-great-great grandfather, owned a sawmill with his brothers on the East Branch of the Delaware River at Partridge Island. The Delaware River separates Wayne County, Pennsylvania and Delaware County, New York and the villages of Hancock and Boyd’s Mills are only 30 miles apart, so I have wondered if the two families had known of each other before our parents met and married.
This would make some sense because both families owned sawmills within miles of each other, but where was the evidence?
The Mitchell family, who were also settlers in Wayne County, are the link.
Ebenezer Wheeler and his brother William owned a sawmill at Partridge Island in the East Branch of the Delaware River near Hancock, New York. Deeds completed in 1799 through 1801 and on file in Delhi, New York document this.Joseph Wood and his partner Thomas Boyd owned several sawmills near Calkin’s creek, which empties into the Delaware River in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Early maps of the area show these mills and Joseph’s obituary documents his partnership.

Almira and Emalinda Wheeler were sisters to Delanah Wheeler our great-great-great grandmother. Their relationships are documented in Delanah's will on file at Delhi, New York. The three Wheeler sisters were the daughters of Ebenezer Wheeler of Partridge Island. This bond of marriage among the families would have made the Wood family familiar with the Wheeler family over 100 years before our mother and father married.
